INCREASED TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT DURING PROM SEASON

(DELAWARE COUNTY, OH) On May 3rd and May 10th, the five high schools in Delaware County will hold their annual proms.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office will increase their enforcement of traffic safety on the dates of all of the events. The high visibility of Sheriff’s Deputies will also serve as a reminder for students to drive carefully and travel safely.

Deputies will keep a close watch for speeding, aggressive driving and wearing safety belts. Other concerns include underage drinking and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

“Our hope is that we do not have to write one single ticket or respond to any incidents,” stated Delaware County Sheriff Walter L. Davis, III. “We want all of the students to enjoy their prom while remaining safe and making good decisions.”

Olentangy and Buckeye Valley high schools hold their proms on Saturday, May 3rd while Olentangy Liberty, Big Walnut and Delaware Hayed hold their proms on Saturday, May 10th.

MOCK ACCIDENT SCENE AT BUCKEYE VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL

(DELAWARE COUNTY, OH) High school proms in Delaware County are just around the corner, bringing anticipation and excitement to students. Along with the overall enjoyment of the season come concerns of students driving safely, wearing seatbelts, obeying the speed limit and avoiding underage drinking.

As an example of the dangers, Buckeye Valley High School has teamed up with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other agencies to stage a mock drunk-driving accident scene for the students.

Delaware County Sheriff Walter L. Davis, III stated, “Alcohol and driving do not mix. Students need to realize that any amount of alcohol will depress their system and slow their reaction time.”

Students will hear a mock 911 call and witness all of the agencies responding to the scene, including a life-flight helicopter. Following the accident scene, students will attend a mock memorial service in the auditorium.

“This mock accident is a realistic example of what can happen if a person who has been drinking gets behind the wheel of a car. The effects can be devastating to our community,” added Davis.

Buckeye Valley High School stages this scenario for their students every four years. The accident scene is tomorrow morning on the football field at Buckeye Valley High School, 901 Coover Road in Delaware, beginning at 9:30 AM.
