(DELAWARE COUNTY, OH) July 2, 2010- The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possibility that a man accused of attempted burglary is connected to other property crimes in Central Ohio.

On June 17, the Sheriff’s Office responded to an attempted burglary in Trenton Township. The crime happened around 9:15 a.m. at 14290 Perfect Road. Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said: “The criminal used a fairly common method of operation for burglars. He knocked on the front door of the home. When no one answered, he went to the back of the house where he tried to break-in through the screen door.” A witness saw the stranger in the backyard and called the Sheriff’s Office. The witness was able to describe the man and his vehicle. Sheriff Davis said, “That kind of information gives us a strong start in our investigation.” Delaware County detectives used information from the witness to develop additional leads and name 58-year-old Joseph L. Wyrick as a suspect.

With the assistance of the Columbus Division of Police on July 1, Wyrick was taken into custody on Delbert Avenue in Columbus. He is held in the Delaware County Jail charged with attempted burglary, a third degree felony.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possibility that Wyrick is responsible for other recent Delaware County burglaries or attempted burglaries. Sheriff Davis said: “We are sharing information with other Central Ohio law enforcement agencies to see if Mr. Wyrick is connected to unsolved thefts or burglaries in their jurisdictions.”

In less than a month, this is the second case of this type solved, in part, due to information obtained by an observant member of the public. In June, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Alexis Riegel for five burglaries in Liberty Township, thanks to tips from the public. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office recommends that all citizens avoid confronting a potential criminal themselves. Call the Sheriff’s Office immediately and report as much descriptive information as possible.
