RESIDENTS INVITED TO LEARN NEW WAYS TO PROTECT THEIR HOMES

(DELAWARE COUNTY, OH) August 26, 2010-“You are the key to keeping your community safe.” That is the message the Delaware County Sheriff hopes more residents will embrace during a township wide meeting on Monday.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Liberty Township Trustees are asking members of our community to take a more active role in protecting their homes, neighbors and businesses by joining a community watch group called a Sheriff Watch. A township wide informational meeting about starting a Sheriff Watch program will be held on Monday, August 30. This meeting is open to any and all residents/communities in Liberty Township and is designed to inform residents of the benefits of starting a Sheriff Watch program.
During the meeting Sheriff Walter L. Davis III will explain the Sheriff Watch program and the benefits as well as how to get community members involved. He will also provide homeowners with tips on how to prevent crime in their neighborhoods.

Sheriff Davis said: “We are empowering homeowners associations and community groups to become our partners in public safety.” Davis continued: “No one is more aware of the challenges facing a particular community than the people who live in it.”

Having a Sheriff Watch that works closely with the Sheriff’s Office is a direct way to keep neighbors informed of possible suspicious activity or developing crime trends in their area. It is also a means of inviting residents to use valuable community services available to them.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE ENCOURAGES SAFE DRIVING AS KIDS GO BACK TO SCHOOL

(DELAWARE COUNTY, OH) August 24, 2010- As Delaware County children head back to school, the Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to use extra caution on the roads.

“Remember speed limits are reduced to 20 miles per hour in school zones during school hours,” Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said. “The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office will be increasing the visibility of our patrols in school zones to make sure drivers follow the rules so our children get to and from school safely.”

When schools are in session, some children will be walking or riding their bicycles to and from school– many of them during the busiest time of the day when motorist are travelling to work. The beginning of the school year is a time when children are at an increased risk. There are many more children on the road each morning and afternoon combined with changed driving patterns and shorter daylight hours.

Wednesday, August 25 is the first day of school in the Big Walnut, Delaware City, Olentangy and Westerville City School Districts. Buckeye Valley Schools start classes on September 1.

Tips for Motorists:
• Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits
• Always stop for a school bus that has stopped to load/unload children
• Be alert and ready to stop. Watch for children, especially where there are no sidewalks

Tips for Parents:
• Help children learn and practice the safety rules for walking, bicycling or riding in a passenger car, or school bus
• Supervise young children as they are walking or biking to school
• Be a good role model. Always buckle up and follow pedestrian safety rules
